Why You Should Not Use Nail Polish

A manicure and pedicure is a longstanding beauty routine that offers women and some men the chance to unwind and leave the salon feeling happy and wonderful. But next time you go to make your next appointment, think about this: nowadays, many nail polishes have been found to contain extremely high levels of toxic components. Are beautiful nails worth your health? Think again…

Toxins in Nail Polishes

To determine how toxic nail polish really is, the California Environmental Protection Agency tested 25 different salon-quality nail polishes. They tried these nail polishes for three chemicals that have known health hazards. The chemicals tested for include dibutyl phthalate, toluene, and formaldehyde.

They tested for these three chemicals explicitly because of contemporary changes in the industry. After a criticism against nail polishes containing these ingredients, many manufacturers claimed to remove them from their products. Some manufacturers even went as far as to put a toxin-free label on their products.

Dibutyl phthalate is a chemical that has been linked to birth defects in lab animals; study has been similar for toluene. Formaldehyde is a well-known carcinogen with many different health risks.

Why They Are Dangerous?

Why are these chemicals particularly dangerous? Toluene is a translucent liquid that is used to combine other components used to make nail polish. Exposure to toluene can cause dry skin, eye irritation, headaches, and throat irritation. Salon employees, who tend to have steady exposure to these chemical vapors, are at greatest danger.

Dibutyl phtalate is intended to keep your nails from cracking. Conversely, continuous exposure to this chemical has been associated to irritation of nose, mouth and throat, and disruption of reproductive hormones.

Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen. Regular and persistent exposure to this chemical may lead to a higher risk of cancer and other health ailments. Many individuals also suffer allergic reactions to formaldehyde, so you may better watch out for skin irritation or any allergy symptoms after getting your nails done.

When you contemplate everything your hands do, it’s clear that you have to be very cautious about what you are putting on your nails. Even those who are very careful about keeping their hands out of their mouth may inadvertently touch their mouths several times.

Whenever you touch your mouth with a manicured nails, you are hosting these chemicals to the inside of your body. In due course, this can have dreadful consequences, especially if you’re a regular salon client.

Fashioning Better Nail Polish Selections

The answer, of course, is to pick out nail polishes that don’t use these toxic components. Gradually more beauty manufacturers are removing these toxins from their products, so you may have a greater variety of selection.

Toxic chemicals in nail polish are a menace to your health, but you don’t have to relinquish this much-loved beauty routine of yours. Just change to a nontoxic nail polish and you will enjoy all the benefits of a great manicure/pedicure. So you can stay healthy and, of course, beautiful!
